To Belong is to Surrender: The Psychology Behind Cult Leadership and Membership

Alexandra Fuhs

Abstract

Up to 10,000 cults currently exist in the United States, and though a few have been exposed for their brutality such as Peoples Temple and NXIVM, most fly under the radar. They are led by charismatic, narcissistic individuals seeking a sense of acceptance from a group of followers who often lack a support system themselves and have been deprived of emotional needs in early childhood, leading them to seek out a pseudo-family. Cult leaders use psychological manipulation tactics, leadership styles, and language to grow and maintain a following, allowing them to maintain a strong in-group and organization structure.
